  • Episode 49 – Comedic Theory and the Atheism of Doom

This week’s episode features a conversation with comedian Joseph Scrimshaw, author of Comedy of Doom.  Joseph sat down with us to talk about comedic theory, atheism and his new Kickstarter campaign for Flaw Fest.* Joseph is also a podcaster and Molly will be appearing on a live recording of his podcast, Obsessed: with Joseph Scrimshaw at CONvergence this year.  We talk about all of this and more in our far reaching conversation that, of course, includes five questions of doom!  We also have a chance for you to win Joseph’s Comedy album “Verbing the Noun!

*Note – since the episode was recorded, Tim’s band, The Dregs, have been signed up to write and record a song should the Kickstarter be successful.

  • Episode 48 – CONvergence 2013!

This week we spend the entire episode geeking out about our favorite convention, CONvergence, where we recorded our first two episodes.  The convention starts exactly one month from the posting date of this episode! We try to talk about all the cool stuff we’ll be doing there this year but there is just too much.  We have to sum up.  If you’re interested in learning about the convention and finding out about opportunities to see us at the con, this is the episode to listen to!  Come join us for nerdy-gras!

  • Episode 39 – Wrath of Cons!

It’s been just a few short weeks since Matt Savelkoul joined us to talk about Dr. Who.  We brought him back because we have some convention appearances coming up and Matt has been to a bunch of them.  In one of our longer episodes, we spend a great deal of time talking about conventions geeky and skeptical and Matt apologizes for something that Tim doesn’t think he should feel badly about.  We also give a brief preview of our upcoming appearance at the Skep-Tech conference in the Twin Cities.  Then, as a repeat guest, Matt gets to ask us five questions!  Make sure you listen to the end of the episode to learn how you can win a free copy of Atheist Voices of Minnesota.

  • Live Podcasting Appearances!

We love doing the live podcasting thing and in April, we’ll be recording several live podcasts for your viewing and listening pleasure.

We’ll be Featured guests at Skep-Tech, which takes place April 5th, 6th & 7th.  You can view the schedule here.

Currently, we are going to be hosting and recording a panel discussion about skepticism and technology featuring Tim Farley, Greta Christina, Zach Weinersmith and Maggie Koerth-Baker.   Yes, our plan is pretty much to shut up and let the rest of the panel talk.  That panel will run from 7:00 – 7:50 on Friday, April 5th.

We also have two live podcast/interviews set up!

At 8:00 on the 5th, we’ll be recording a podcast with Jen McCreight.  We’re going to be talking religion and Game of Thrones.

UPDATE:  Jen has, unfortunately, had to cancel her appearance at the conference.  We’re working to secure a different guest and we’ll update this post as new information becomes available.  Hopefully we can get Jen on the podcast at a later date.

Instead, we’ve scheduled a podcast with Greta Christina to talk about her recent book “Why are you Atheists so Angry? 99 Things that Piss off the Godless.”

At 9:30 on Sunday the 7th, we’ll be recording with Zach Weinersmith

Skep-Tech is a free conference so we encourage you to register and join us!

Later in the month, the three of us will be at Omegacon Spring in Siren Wisconsin!  The fall convention was where we recorded the legendary Drunk Molly episode so who knows what will happen this time?  Date and time one this one is TBD because it is a slacker con and we’ll do it when we feel like it!

And this year’s CONvergence marks our one year anniversary!  We’ll be recording two podcasts live.  One of them will be with our first ever guest Melissa Kaercher and the other will feature PZ Myers! The schedule for the convention will go live in a month or so so we’ll have date/time information soon.

P.S: We’ll have time to record an extra podcast or three at CONvergence and we’d love to record with out-of-town guests.  If you are a fan of the show, have a good idea for an episode topic and you’ll be at the convention, let us know!

  • Episode 6 – Archaeologists Are Smart

Episode 6 is the last episode we recorded at CONvergence 2012.  We had a chance to talk to Jason Thibeault, whose name is unfortunately pronouned the same as “Teabow,” and Stephanie Zvan, who both blog over at FreethoughtBlogs.  They both attended the ancient alien debate the previous evening and were nice enough to tell us a little bit about the event.  It sounded a little bit like a bloodbath (figuratively speaking).  Don’t take their word for it, though, we have  a link to the full panel below.  You’ll want to look away but you’ll find that you can’t!  Then we turn our five questions on our guests and they give some very revealing answers.  Stephanie, it particular, digs very deep to give us her favorite atheist character.  It was a great interview to finish out our first weekend as podcasters!

  • Episode 2 – It’s the Hat

Our second episode was also recorded in front of a live audience at CONvergence 2012.  Our guest was Kammy Lyon from Skepchick.org.  She was super nervous about recording in front of real people but she did a great job.  We talked  about SkepchicCON, the party that Skepchick.org hosts at the Convention as well as giving some advice to atheists who are trying to come out of the closet.  Unfortunatley, we have to stop the conversation short.  We’ll return to the topic in a future podcast for sure. We also talked about trying to keep words like “god,”  ”faith,” and other idioms out of our language and decided that was just too annoying. She answered our five questions and made all of us very hungry.  In fact, we’re still hungry and waiting for a Geeks Without God party at her house!

We talk a little bit about a video Rebecca Watson made that pissed  people off.  Here’s a link to the video in question.

Here’s a link to Tim’s Blog about “Brave”.

Molly and Kammy refer to an article by Hitchens.  If you want to know what they are talking about, here it is.

Here’s a picture of Tim wearing the hat.  See?  You totally can’t tell who he is!

  • Sharing the Love

Well, it’s been a fun first week here at Geeks Without God.  We’re very pleased at the number of people who have given our little project a try and we hope you come back and tell your friends about us.  We want to give a shout out to some folks who mentioned us this week.

While you all probably know who PZ Myers is, we’d like to thank him for mentioning us in his Blog about CONvergence. It was most unexpected and it made Tim get off his ass and post the podcast a few days earlier than originally planned.

Melissa Kaercher, our first guest, has a nice write up on CONvergence that mentions us.  She also gave us our own blog entry!  Sweet!

And our friends over at the Appropros of Nothing Podcast gave us a shout out so we are shouting back.  Thanks guys!

  • Episode 1 – Prometheus

Welcome to Geeks Without God!  Our first episode was recorded at CONvergence 2012 in front of a live audience.    Our first guest was Melissa Kaercher, who managed to sit on more panels than anyone at CONvergence ever has before.  We figure that had more than a little to do with why she said “yes” when we asked her to record with us.  The four of us try to talk about the religious themes in Prometheus but we are frequently distracted by all the related stupid stuff in the film about which we swear repeatedly.  We’re just trying to tell you that Tim swears all the time. We also spring five questions on Melissa and among other things, she suggests we all watch Bunraku.

A couple of shout outs:  Thanks to CONvergence for letting us record our first podcast at their convention, to Geoffrey Brown for helping Tim write our theme song, to Melissa for being our first guest, and to our nearly full audience at the convention.  We didn’t want to go to a panel at 9:30 in the morning.  We’re flattered you did.

    A few links:

Check out this video from Red Letter Media about Prometheus.

Here’s an article in which you can read about Ridley Scott’s ideas about the Aliens relationship to Jesus.

Also, Tim wants to note that both A.I. and Prometheus feature artifical life forms named David.  Spoooooooky!
