  • Episode 261 – Collectable Cards and Cookies

BrianDurkin1This week we are joined by Philadelphia comedian and podcaster Brain Durkin.  Brian was in town for a little while and we sat down with him to talk about his history making money playing collectable card games, his thoughts on religion, and his podcast Full Belly Laughs. We had a great conversation with him and hope you enjoy it!

  • Episode 259 – Mooks is in the House!

Mooks is in the HouseThis week, our guest is Saymoukda Vongsay, the Refugenius!  She is a poet and playwright who is going to be a Guest of Honor at CONvergence 2017.  We have a far ranging conversation with her that covers her experiences as a refugee, her buddhist roots, her play “Kung-Fu Zombies” and just about everything else!  If you are coming to the convention this year, she is definitely going to be a guest you want to find and we hope our conversation helped to put her on your radar!

  • Episode 258 – Luke Cage & Iron Fist

Luke Cage & Iron FistThis week, we take a look at the latest original Marvel series on Netflix – Luke Cage and Iron Fist.  We are joined by our favorite Marvel expert, Mark Sherman.  Luke Cage, we all agree, isn’t perfect but is still pretty darn good.  Iron Fist, however, is a series about which none of us could find anything to recommend.  We compare the two shows and try to figure out what Luke Cage got right and what Iron Fist got so horribly wrong.  We do spoil some shit about both shows but take our word for it – Iron Fist was pretty much spoiled already.

  • Episode 255 – Murmurs of Doubt

perf6.690x9.610.inddFor this week’s episode, we got a sneak preview at the new graphic novella, Murmurs of Doubt, by writer/artists Rebecca Fox.  The book will be out the middle of June and available for purchase via Rebecca’s web page and also on Amazon.  It is twelve explorations of the moment when someone first experiences that moment of doubt that could lead to the loss of faith.  All three of us found different stories that really connected with who we are and with our own journeys to atheism.  We were very excited to get an advanced look at this book and recommend it highly.  Rebecca is a long time listener so you should definitely show some solidarity and take a look at her work!

  • Episode 253 – Heartland Institute Bullshit

whyscientists2dWebThis week, we are joined by bio anthropologist Greg Laden to talk about “Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming,” a bullshit book distributed by the Heartland Institute to science teachers.  Being actually qualified to speak on the topic of climate change, Greg helps us unpack why the book is bullshit as well as why the Heartland Institute wasted money by distributing the book in the first place.  He also has a blog called “Greg Laden’s Blog” and he explains why it’s called that.

  • Episode 251 – Shut up Betty, I’m Trying to Pray to Mecca

14924-200This week our guest is Dave Meyers, who won a guest spot on our podcast through a generous donation to Fearless Comedy during Die Laughing.  Dave wanted to talk to us about his belief that it takes a lot of strength to have faith in god.  We don’t all agree but we had a really interesting conversation about our differences.  We then engage in mutual round of five questions because he brought some for us and we already had some for him.  There wasn’t enough time for all ten so we came up with a compromise.

  • Episode 250 – X-Men Fools Gold

hero_5This week, we take a look at the controversy surrounding the recent X-Men: Gold #1 comic.  Muslim artist Ardian Syaf stirred up a lot of anger after including some arguably anti-semitic “easter eggs” in his drawings.  To understand what is going on, it helps to know that the messages were in support of a movement against recently ousted Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.  He was charged with blasphemy for criticizing the Koran (although it would appear he didn’t actually do that but we’ll get into that during the podcast).  We talk about the whole mess with our guest, Marvel super fan Mark Sherman.  Mark also becomes the first guest to answer our new five questions!

For more, here’s an article from Bleeding Cool with several relevant links.

Also interesting is this piece by G. Willow Wilson, who is also a Muslim.

And hey – here’s one of the panels in question.

  • Episode 245 – O.A.F

956e0342f5be216eeeaa9f42f0148521This week’s guest is our good friend Justin Ropella.  We talk with Justin about how he is Out as Fuck about everything in his life including his atheism, being queer, liberal, and even being monogamous.  We talk about this idea of being completely 100% committed to being entirely who you are to everyone all the time.  He then gets the opportunity to ask us five questions, which we answer in a thoughtful and intelligent fashion.

  • Episode 243 – The Rise of the Alt-Right

maxresdefault-e1464888685807-800x430This week, we are joined by returning guest Nathan Gerber, who brings with him the topic of the rise of the alt-right.  By alt-right, of course, we mean white supremacists.  You can also call them racists, bigots, or even fucking Nazis.  Recent political events have given a lot of visibility to this rather ugly portion of our society and we talk through all of that.  Then Nathan asks us five really horrible questions we hope we never have to answer again.  Thanks a lot, Nate.

  • Episode 241 – Connectedness

People NetworkThis week, our guest is Riki Robinson of the Tortuga Twins.  We’ve had his compatriot, Ronn Bauman, on our podcast numerous times so we felt we needed to spread the love.  Riki isn’t actually an atheist.  We don’t want to put words into his mouth, but he’s more of a deist.  Kind of.  He says he believes in “connectedness,” which is pretty cool as far as we’re concerned.  He’s also works with Islamic Relief USA and we talk about that.  If you want to hear more about that work, check out the podcast What a Relief!  He’s also the host of the Success Freaks podcast.  Enjoy!
