  • Episode 263 – Life After Death and Austria

main-thumb-t-18145-200-vVlpOpOFKDnRmNEBrxSzORsf2E7S48fiThis week’s episode was recorded live at CONvergence 2017 for our fifth birthday!  We are joined by frequent guest Joseph Scrimshaw who tells us all about his work with a video game company in Austria.  We also talk about the idea of what we’d like to see in an afterlife and our concerns with the concept of an afterlife segregated into good and evil.  You may also hear an occasional word or two from Laura Okagaki-Vraspir!  We don’t totally remember.  We had cake flavored vodka.

  • Episode 262 – Death with Doctor LOV

cancer-101-s1-what-is-cancer-cellThis week’s episode was recorded live at CONvergence 2017 with our good friend Laura Okagaki-Vraspir or, as we call her because of her initials, Doctor Lov!  You might remember her as one of our first guests way back on episode 8 when she talked about zombie fungus.  She’s back to talk to us about cancer!  Specifically, she talks to us about facing a potentially terminal disease as an atheist.  It is a super touching Geeks Without God in which we have a serious conversation – and also make jokes – about cancer.  Joseph Scrimshaw also says the occasional word or two.

  • Episode 260 – CONvergence 2017

Connie-as-Rosie-the-Riviter-e1396674236605This week, we are getting ready for our annual trip to CONvergence!  Our podcast debuted there five years ago and we all have very personal connections to the convention.  We talk about our schedules for the con, some of our favorite things, and even some things that we don’t enjoy quite as much.  If you are coming to the convention, we hope we get a chance to see you there.  If you aren’t someone who attends CONvergence, maybe the episode will get you thinking about a local sci-fi con of your own!

Note: We are aware there are some audio issues with this episode starting around the 22 minute mark.  The problem is not the same as issues we’ve encountered on previous episodes but it is, unfortunately, in the source file.  As always, we’ll do some checking to figure out how we can prevent such issues in the future!

    Show notes below the fold!

  • Episode 259 – Mooks is in the House!

Mooks is in the HouseThis week, our guest is Saymoukda Vongsay, the Refugenius!  She is a poet and playwright who is going to be a Guest of Honor at CONvergence 2017.  We have a far ranging conversation with her that covers her experiences as a refugee, her buddhist roots, her play “Kung-Fu Zombies” and just about everything else!  If you are coming to the convention this year, she is definitely going to be a guest you want to find and we hope our conversation helped to put her on your radar!

  • Episode 211 – Amanda Marcotte

xDN_rrIBThis week’s episode was recorded live at CONvergence 2016 and features political journalist Amanda Marcotte.  Much as we did a couple weeks ago with C. Robert Cargill, we spend this episode discussing the current political climate.  While the episode was recorded before the National Conventions, our conversation is just as relevant today as it was then.  We do delve into how Amanda got into the world of political journalism and make many jokes at Donald Trump’s expense.  If you like Trump, we’re sorry-not sorry.

  • Episode 210 – Laughing at the Darkness

KellyPortraitNewThis week we present the first of two episodes recorded live at CONvergence 2016!  Our first guest was author Kelly McCullough, who was invited to talk with us about using humor to illuminate dark situations.  In addition to that important topic, a lot of time is spent reminiscing about how much time Tim and Kelly spent together in their youth and how Kelly’s current career might just be Tim’s fault.  In a roundabout sort of way.

  • Episode 209 – Brexit and Trump

3feWZw5m_400x400This week we talk with our friend C. Robert Cargill.  Cargill is a novelist (Dreams and Shadows) and screenwriter (Sinister, Dr. Strange) but we talked to him about politics.  Cargill is a Christian and a moderate conservative so he provides a considerably different viewpoint from one normally found on our podcast.  We spend some time looking at the Brexit situation in Britain and how it relates to the rise of Donald Trump in America.  Then, after bemoaning the sad state of politics in our country from the left and the right, we move on to our five questions.   Hopefully, we can get Cargill back to talk about his work on films like Sinister and Dr. Strange after Strange hits the theaters in November!

  • Episode 207 – Safe Spaces and CONvergence

Connie-as-Redshirt-web-290x300Well, CONvergence is just a few days away and that means it is almost time for our birthday celebration!  For those that are new to our podcast, we debuted at CONvergence four years ago and it is a bit of a homecoming for all of us.  We spend a bit of time talking about what we’ll be doing at the convention this year but we also take a look at the question of safe spaces as it pertains to Vilification Tennis.  Does a convention that claims to be interested in creating safe spaces have an obligation to ensure that if something finds something offensive, it shouldn’t be allowed at all?  Obviously, we have some opinions!

Come find us at the con this year!  We have badge ribbons!

  • Episode 160 – Making Tabletop Sausage

imagesFor this week’s episode, we were joined once again by comedian Joseph Scrimshaw!  Joseph recently appeared on Tabletop with Wil Wheton and we wanted to talk to him about what it was like making reality show sausage. He tells us how he found himself on the series and all about what it was like to produce an episode.  He also gets a crack at our brand new five questions!

  • Episode 159 – Transgender in the News

caitlyn-jenner-joins-twitterThis week we are joined once again by Miranda Richards.  She recorded with us in the luxurious hotel room studios at CONvergence 2015.  With all the big GLBT news including Caitlyn Jenner and the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, we decided to talk about that for the majority of the podcast.  However, Miranda was also one of the first people to answer our new five questions!

P.S: Tim identifies Miranda as “Miranda Richardson” in the opening credits.  Because he’s a dolt.
